Buying a caravan, camper, or motorhome in Victoria isnโt just about finding the right style or price. Youโll want to make sure itโs safe, compliant, and ready for registration. Victoria has specific requirements to ensure every caravan transfer is handled correctly.
In Victoria, all registered caravans must have a Certificate of Roadworthiness (RWC) before they can be sold or have their registration transferred. This certificate confirms that the caravan meets the minimum safety standards set by VicRoads.
The inspection must be carried out by a licensed vehicle tester, and the certificate is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. If the caravan is unregistered, youโll need an RWC to re-register it before use.
Always ask the seller to provide a current Certificate of Roadworthiness. Itโs your assurance that the caravan is safe and legal to tow.
Suppose your caravan includes a gas system (such as a cooktop, oven, or hot water service). In that case, the seller must supply a Gas Safety Compliance Certificate issued by a licensed gasfitter accredited by Energy Safe Victoria.
Electrical systems, including power outlets, lights, or solar installations, must also comply with AS/NZS 3001 (Electrical Installations, Transportable Structures). Itโs strongly recommended that a licensed electrician checks and certifies these systems before sale.
When buying a registered caravan, the transfer must be completed through VicRoads within 14 days of purchase. The buyer pays the transfer fee and any applicable stamp duty.
You can transfer ownership easily online using the VicRoads website or by visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. Both the buyer and seller must complete their respective sections of the transfer paperwork.
If youโre purchasing an unregistered caravan, youโll need to arrange a Vehicle Identity Validation (VIV) inspection and provide proof of ownership before registration.
Before finalising payment, inspect the caravan thoroughly:
Ask for documentation and receipts for any recent repairs or upgrades. These provide valuable proof of the vanโs condition and compliance.
Following these steps ensures your caravan purchase in Victoria is legal, safe, and stress-free. A roadworthy and compliant caravan gives you peace of mind, knowing youโre fully covered under Victorian road laws and ready for your next adventure.
Caravan Sales recommends confirming all certificates and documentation before completing your purchase so you can hit the road with confidence.
Read genuine reviews from fellow caravanners and buy with confidence, knowing youโre dealing with sellers you can trust.

All active listings on Caravan Sales are current. If a caravan has been sold, the seller should remove or update their listing. For peace of mind, we always recommend contacting the seller directly.
Caravan Sales does not inspect caravans. Listings are created directly by sellers. We encourage buyers to inspect caravans in person and demand service history, compliance certificates, and receipts where relevant.

Many of our sellers can recommend trusted providers, and youโre free to arrange finance or insurance through your preferred company.
The safest way to pay for a caravan is to meet with the seller in person so you can inspect the caravan before paying. Avoid sending money before youโve seen the caravan. If in doubt, use secure payment methods and trust your instincts.
You deal directly with the seller, any disputes need to be resolved between you and them. However, we take fraudulent activity seriously, so if you believe a listing is suspicious, please report it to us immediately. If the seller is not responding to any of your calls or messages, the caravan may no longer be available. Report it to us so we can take necessary action.
