Why Buyers Across Brisbane Choose Caravan Sales

Buying a caravan, camper, or motorhome in NSW isn’t just about finding the right design or price, it’s just as important to check it’s compliant and safe for the road. New South Wales has specific requirements to guide the sales process and legal transfer of ownership between buyers and sellers.
Roadworthiness and Safety Checks

In NSW, all registered caravans must meet roadworthy standards before transfer. While a formal “Safety Certificate” (as used in Queensland) isn’t required, you should ensure the caravan passes inspection under Transport for NSW guidelines. Always confirm the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and check that registration details match the compliance plate.

If the caravan is unregistered, you’ll need a blue slip inspection from an authorised inspection station before it can be registered in your name.

If the caravan includes gas fittings (such as a stove, oven, or hot water system), the system must comply with NSW gas safety regulations. A compliance certificate from a licensed gas fitter provides peace of mind that everything is safe and legal.

Electrical systems, including power outlets, lighting, or solar setups, should also be checked by a qualified electrician to confirm they meet Australian Standards.

Once a sale occurs, both parties must lodge the Notice of Disposal and Transfer of Registration through Service NSW within 14 days. The buyer must pay any applicable transfer fees and stamp duty (where applicable). Transfers can be completed easily online via the Service NSW website.

Before making payment, inspect the caravan thoroughly:

  • VIN and compliance plate are visible and match registration details
  • Chassis, suspension, and coupling are in sound condition
  • Electrical and plumbing systems are functional
  • Service records and maintenance history are available

Ask the seller for receipts or documentation of recent repairs or upgrades. These help verify the van’s condition and value.

Following these steps should mean your caravan purchase is safe, compliant, and hassle-free. Following the regulation protects you from unexpected issues down the road. Caravan Sales recommends verifying all certification and registration details before completing any purchase, so you can hit the highway with total confidence.

If I had known how safe and easy it was to sell our van, I wouldn’t have hesitated for a year! Thank you for your help. Because I wasn’t expecting to a buyer replying so quickly, missed one caller, who turned out to be very helpful and understanding. He gave advice and made me more confident. It was only a fortnight later that the second caller and I gained trust through using your site. We came to arrangement and he travelled over 1000km to pick it up. We now know Margaret and Jamie as wonderful people! A bonus!

Yours sincerely, Betty

Yes. Browsing, searching, and enquiring about caravans is completely free.

Absolutely! You can filter your search by price, category, condition (new or used), number of berths, brand, location, and plenty more. There’s also a general search box if you’d rather type in exactly what you’re looking for.

All active listings on Caravan Sales are current. If a caravan has been sold, the seller should remove or update their listing. For peace of mind, we always recommend contacting the seller directly.

Caravan Sales does not inspect caravans. Listings are created directly by sellers. We encourage buyers to inspect caravans in person and demand service history, compliance certificates, and receipts where relevant.

While we don’t provide finance or insurance directly, Caravan Sales partners with Stratton Finance to help you explore finance options. You can use our loan calculator to estimate repayments and, if you’re interested, connect directly with Stratton Finance to arrange a loan. Please note that all results are an indication only and not a quote or pre-approval.

Many of our sellers can also recommend trusted providers, and you’re always free to arrange finance or insurance through your preferred company.

The safest way to pay for a caravan is to meet with the seller in person so you can inspect the caravan before paying. Avoid sending money before you’ve seen the caravan. If in doubt, use secure payment methods and trust your instincts.

Because you deal directly with the seller, any disputes need to be resolved between you and them. However, we take fraudulent activity seriously, so if you believe a listing is suspicious, please report it to us immediately. If the seller is not responding to any of your calls or messages, the caravan may no longer be available. Report it to us so we can take necessary action.
