Data reveals young Aussie women are loving their RV adventures
Queensland is continuing to see strong visitor trips¹ within the region, therefore it comes as no surprise that a new trend has emerged with young Australian women opting for weekend getaways in 4WD’s.
Data reveals a 64 per cent increase in Google searches around girl’s camping trips in the last 12 months and there has been over half a million views on TikTok for #girlscampingtrip and #campinggirls.
The caravan and camping industry continues to see high visitor nights across the country, with women on average staying longer on caravan and camping trips compared to males and accounting for 2.8 million nights for year ending March 2023².
The increase in women’s camping weekends away is evident not only on social media but also through Facebook groups such as Adventure Girls 4WD and Yeah The Girls Offroad having 23,500 and 18,400 members respectively.
Taylorr Jade who founded the Adventure Girls 4WD Facebook group said that they usually end up with more than 20 girls on their weekend trips away.
“The group started in February 2021, and we have taken so many day trips and weekends away I have lost count. We do 4WD days trips to Glasshouse Mountains and Bribie Island and our weekend getaways have taken us adventuring to Utopia Falls in Wide Bay and Double Island just to name a few.
“It’s been an amazing way to come together, share advice, create lasting friendships, explore new and interesting 4WD destinations whilst empowering young likeminded women.
“We are actually in the midst of planning a two-week 4WD and camping road trip to Uluru in early May and already have 13 members booked in,” Taylorr concludes.
“For so long 4WD and camping has been known as a guys trip, but why do they get to have all the fun? We are a bunch of young, passionate gals who enjoy getting out and exploring what our beautiful country has to offer all whilst having fun in our 4WD’s.
Data reveals 15 million overnight caravan and camping trips were taken nationally at year ending September 2023³ creating 60 million visitor nights which helped to generate $10 billion visitor spend.
Of those visitors the 15 to 19 years age group experienced the highest growth rate of 21 per cent and the 20 to 29 years age group experienced a 6.9 per cent increaseˆ.
Jason Plant, CEO of Caravanning Queensland Trade and Industries says with caravanning and camping remaining a popular holiday choice for Queenslanders, it’s not surprising that young women are jumping on the bandwagon.
“With so many great destinations for girl’s weekends away like Fraser Island and Moreton Bay and it being an economically and feasible holiday option, there is no reason why the gals can’t pack up and head off for a great weekend away.
“The surge in caravanning over recent years has proven beneficial for the industry and we continue to see new trends develop regularly, the latest being the girls 4WD camping and caravan getaways,” Mr Plant concludes.
