A new Aussie ‘Rite of Passage’ trend is emerging for our next generation of travellers
Despite the cost of living, our youngsters are travelling more than ever, with over half (53%) prioritising it over other life experiences such as a career or a mortgage¹.
Each year Aussie grade 12 students consider if they want to head straight into tertiary studies or take a year off to travel and experience life. Last year close to one third (31.4%) of Aussie school leavers ditched the norm and opted for a gap year².
But how they are travelling may surprise you as 42% ditched long haul international flights in favour of domestic travel³ and experiencing a gap year via the humble ‘van life’ approach.
Aussie Gen Z interest in caravan and camping has skyrocketed over the past few years with 22% of the younger cohort purchasing an RV. The contemporary trend has resulted in Gen Z and Millennials now accounting for 45% of caravan and camping adventures compared to grey nomads with 36%∗.
Meet Mia and Brody, who are inspiring a new wave of like-minded Gen Z travellers to hit the road and live their best life.
What started as a “gap year” plan after Mia finished her university degree and Brody completed his trade turned into an epic journey around Australia when their overseas travel dreams were grounded by COVID.
Almost three years later, this duo is still living the van life dream, having visited many of Australia’s breathtaking destinations and they show no signs of wrapping up their life on the road.
With a knack for turning detours into destinations and a love for exploring local gems, Mia and Brody are proof that caravanning isn’t just for retirees—it’s a lifestyle full of adventure, connection, and unforgettable landscapes.
Jason Plant, CEO of the Caravanning Queensland said that the trend shows no sign of slowing down as we continue to see our youngsters priced out of international travel due to the cost of living.
“Young Australians are embracing the freedom and flexibility of van life, and we’re seeing a seismic shift in how the next generation approaches travel and adventure.
“The rise in RV ownership among Gen Z, combined with their growing preference for domestic travel, is transforming caravanning into a vibrant and youthful movement.
“This current trend gives our youngsters the opportunity to explore all that Australia has to offer. They choose to work in regional and remote communities, supporting local economies for a period of time before heading off to a different location and we expect this momentum to continue well into the future.”
Aussies continue their love affair with the nomadic way of life
In the last couple of years, the industry has seen a rise in solo travellers, ‘paw-fect’ travel buddies, roadschooling roamers, newlywed nomads, B-Leisure travellers and more.
